Summer Course 2014 at Lund University

The summer course on ”Historical demographic research using register type data” was held in Lund in August 11-22, 2014, with 19 participants from 12 different countries.

It was taught by Tommy Bengtsson, Martin Dribe, Jonas Helgertz and Luciana Quaranta. The course examined methods and theories of historical demography by focusing on different topics: sources and methods, the Scanian Economic Demographic Database (SEDD), the Intermediate Data Structure (IDS), life tables, social stratification, survival analysis, mortality, marriage and fertility, long-term impacts of early life conditions short-term impacts of economic stress and building episodes tables. Each topic consisted on theoretical lectures and applied labs that focused on data management and model estimations. During the course students conducted exercises on each topic as well as a group project to answer a research question of their choice.
